Faced with growing recruitment difficulties, 32% of companies say they are ready to better train their employees. Employers are therefore more aware of the need to support their employees in their development. With this in mind, training programs are a real driver for talent retention. Companies also benefit in terms of performance, as those that invest in their employees' skills always stand out from the crowd. Your challenge is therefore to successfully implement this learning process so that everyone can benefit. Let's see how.

Definition of a training program

The training program is a support system that can be likened to a learning pathway. It is organized progressively with gradual levels of difficulty. It comprises different modules, each with distinct objectives linked by the same overall project.

Pursuant toArticle L 6321-1of the Labor Code, employers are required to adapt their employees to their positions and maintain their employability. Vocational training can be used to teach skills that are useful for specific positions or, more broadly, for the job market.

Today, more than9 out of 10 employersstruggle to fill positions due to a skills shortage. In addition, 29% of them say that this lack of training has increased in the last year. If you want to maintain your teams' skills in certain areas, professional training is the way to go.

How to build a training course?

As a human resources manager, you play a coordinating role in career management and professional development. So, how can you design effective training programs without making them overly complicated?

Simply follow these key steps:

  • Define the project and its objectives.
  • Maintain employee engagement in their learning.
  • Monitor and improve the journey.

All this is done in collaboration with managers and training supervisors to ensure that the training closely matches operational expectations.

1 - Define the project and objectives

The first step is to identify training needs. This can be done during annual and professional interviews. You can also include questions on this topic in your QWL questionnaire. With the help of managers, you can collect training requests. Next, you will need to prioritize them and present them to your management team.

2 - Engage participants

Once projects have been approved and training programs launched, it is important to ensure that employees are fully engaged. Training programs require the use of tried-and-tested methods such as:

  • Learn and retain information through case studies
  • Learning through repetition by taking quizzes
  • Gain mechanical knowledge

To prevent students from falling behind, they should also be as active as possible, for example, by taking assessment tests.

Trainees are more committed when they know that the completion of the program is validated by a test, a certification, or some form of recognition. The goal for them is to demonstrate a certain level of competence.

3 - Continuous improvement of the professional training program

To find out whether a professional training course has been successful, there is only one solution: ask those involved for their opinion. But be careful, this approach should not be limited to assessing employee satisfaction in the heat of the moment (at the end of the training course).

The questionnaire should be completed both after the training and outside of it. Your goal will then be to cross-reference the learners' feedback with their operational improvement in the field. The aim is to systematize the evaluation of the service providers with whom the company collaborates on:

  • The course completion rate
  • Educational quality
  • Return on Investment

Although insightful and valuable, this kind of monitoring can quickly become time-consuming. That’s where digitizing the training process comes into play.

Building a training program means creating a common thread for employees' careers. This involvement will give them a sense of recognition, which is essential to their commitment. What's more, by simplifying this process as much as possible, you will ultimately be able to offer each employee a targeted and effective career path.
